Congratulations to Gavin Jehu. He is the overall winner of this year’s competition. Gavin’s first round entry, the Pink Air o Dry, is a fly designed to be fished as a Duo technique. Judge, Magnus Angus, said: “The sizing, proportions and especially the silhouette of the winning pattern look ‘right’. It looks buggy, busy and suggestive – if I was a fish I’d eat it!”

The submissions from Kevan Stevenson, Jack Pangburn, Allan Hutton and Frances Davies were highly commended.

Pink Air o Dry
Hook: Partridge Surehold, barbless, size 16.
Thread: Tan, Sheer, 14/0.
Body: Semperfli Dubbing (SF0250).
Tail: Coq de Leon.
Body hackle: Dun cock.
Wing: Pink Air O Dry.
Head hackle: CdC fibres in a dubbing loop.

Here we go guys. We’ve a new fly-tying competition starting from the December magazine and running till the March issue. We’re looking for the best of today’s fly patterns and the identities of the leading fly tyers in the world. The top prize is a Regal Revolution vice, worth £350.

The first category is to tie a trout or grayling fly to cover any aspect of trout or grayling fly fishing. Your fly can be traditional, innovative, or simply one that looks eminently ‘fishable’!

Up for the challenge?

Full details in the December magazine (out this Friday).

THE ESSENTIAL CHALLENGE, AGAIN, IS A UNIQUE OPPERTUNITY TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT, IT IS RARE TO FIND A COMPETITION THAT ACTUALLY SUPPLIES THE MATERIALS, AND GIVES THE READER AN INSENTIVE TO JOIN IN.
SO ONCE AGAIN A BIG THANKYOU FOR GIVING, US, THE READERS THE CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE, [AND HAVE FUN DOING SO], IN TWO EXELLENT COMETITIONS.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, AND I LOOK FOREWARD TO THE LEAGUE IN 2012.

I was somewhat surprizes to discover that I was 10th after the 4th round.

Having managed to reach second place after 2 rounds, thanks I hasten to add, to Jimmy Inglis for his constructive criticism of my flies, I did not submit any further entries.
I had completed my 3 flies for round 3 and stuffed up the 4 fly just prior to the deadline.
The next day my copy of the next issue landed on the doormat and the 4th round is a Salmon fly. I don’t do Salmon flies so didn’t bother with any further entries.

Can someone please explain how 10th place is justified having only made 2 entries in a 4 round competition.
