Hi Colin,
First outing today. 2 ggmullet 1.5 lbs each on the flies you sent me. One on each pattern.
Many fish but a cold wind. Great start to the season. Cant wait for some warmer weather.
Anyone reading this should get out there & give it a go.

Excellent George!! Well done. Flies are only part of the equation, it takes a skilled fisherman to make them work cool smile

Hi Brandon. I’m pleased to hear that you are keen to take up salt water fly fishing.
You are certainly in the perfect location, living close to Chichester Harbour, which offers a good variety of marks.
Sandy point at Hayling Island would be an ideal spot to take your first steps in the salt, fishing from low tide up. Keep an eye out for bird activity in localised areas, a sure sign that Bass or Mackerel are around.
The beaches around Selsey are also worth a visit. In fact, the coasts of Hampshire and West Sussex are generally fishing very well at present, with Bass and Mackerel in abundance.
Your experience of fishing for Trout and Pike will stand you in good stead, especially when casting large flies. A 7wt outfit with floating line is ample for inshore conditions.
Fly choice is refreshingly simple, a few Clousers and Deceivers in olive, chartreuse and black colour schemes will cover most situations. These can be obtained from UK Salt Water Flies.
Early morning and dusk are traditionally the most productive times for Bass fishing.
Remember to rinse rods and reels in fresh water after each trip, to avoid corrosion.

Next months issue of FF&FT; features more in-depth advice on fishing for Bass, with mention of several West Sussex marks.
Best of luck.
Colin

Hi Colin,

I was fishing there with a friend last Thursday 25rd August. Booked a boat and skipper (Dale Ford [Boat =Tempus Fugit] takes 2 fly fishers easily £160 for the day). Took 19 Bass between us, best at 3lb but most on lure as it is hard to get the fly down. Best fly was a sand eel pattern on an ultra fast sinking line. Tide still lifts the line though. No Mackerel seem to have left the harbour. Did try outside the harbour but no luck and rather choppy. All Bass returned without trouble, if you fancy dinner the bream still seem to be fishing well, difficult to catch if you don’t know the “take” Dale is an expert teacher caught about a dozen last time we were fishing there after catching 5 good sized Tope (not on a fly rod!).

Thanks for your Bass tips I will try from the shore in the next few weeks, that way {as long as they meet the length and weight limits} I understand I can keep one for dinner.

Hi Colin . Could you please let me know if any of the patterns you mention in FF&FT; are available to buy?.  I have managed a passable version of the Red Head Diawl Bach but am struggling with others you have mentined in your features. Im not proficient in tying and am desperate to try some of them on some marks im going to revisit soon.

Hi Colin,
I’m heading off to Findochty, Buckie, NE of Scotland in the Summer, and I might take my boat to do a spot of fishing for mainly mackrel, and possibly other species of sea fish. I’m used to only fly fishing for trout, but im keen to try other methods to bag some fish! Could you give me a couple of pointers as of bait, line, time of day etc.
Thanks,
      Ruari
