In Jeremy Lucas’ article which appeared in the November issue (The Dream Team), the Cove-style Spider dressing was omitted. Here are Jeremy Lucas comments on the dressing:
Hook: Fulling Milll Competition heavyweight in 12, 14 and 16; but better is the Tiemco 2499 SPBL in 14, 16 and 18. (Arthur Cove’s were tied on the old Partridge Captain Hamilton).
Thread, & body: Black Pearsalls Gossamer, wound to form a tapered effect from thin to thick(ish) at the head. Note: Arthur always favoured the black, but he dabbled with brown, claret and green thread bodies.
Rib: Fine silver or copper wire.
Hackle: Turns of black hen or soft cock feather, sized for the hook. This varies from a single turn for the faster sinking spider, and increased up to five turns for more opaque, and slower sinking flies. The latter might often be lightly greased, thus obtaining a fly which imitates a buzzer in the process of ecdysis on the surface.
I think that the most useful of the Spiders is in black, with two turns of hen hackle, on a size 14 2499 SPBL - for the lake - or the same in a 16 or 18 on the river.
