Hello everyone. The league is over,we know the winners but it would be nice to hear what do you guys think about new 3 divisions system, about patterns we had to tie, what did you struggle with, actually anything you can say according to the league.
Now to the admin-will we get some sort of summary,is it to show up here or is it to be published in the mag?Who are the round winners, how did tiers do,etc.?If thats ok I can post photos of every single entry I submitted to this season competitions.

Nice to see a post regarding the league. I was a rookie this year so have not had the experience of the previous format. as regards the three divisions, as a total newcomer I must say it did encourage me to have a go knowing full well I wouldn’t be up against the experts. I appreciate it is a bit of fun ( it was at the start, but is now a disease!)but it was still quite daunting throwing my hat into the league. I managed and expected to start in the third division but was pleasently suprised to see me leading. I would then like to say that my tying improved by leaps and bounds, unfortunatley I woke up and began the learning experience. Hair! Hair! and more bloody deer hair started my demise, but then again the more I practise the luckier I get.
I feel I made one very big mistake this year and that was rushing. Although I have plenty of time to tie I still felt the need to get my entries in early, which in hindsight I think could have cost me dearly.
There is a bright side to my sad tale and that is the total enjoyment of actually being involved and tying flies to (I hope in future) a better standard.
Your point about feed back is very apt I for one would have liked to read a bit of a summary, I appreciate Magnus is busy but a generalised summary of each division would help the newcomers, with obviously a list of monthly winners. As the leader of the initial month of the third div I dont know if I’ve won the hook voucher.
As a newcomer I must congratulate the magazine for a excellant competition and long may it continue.

Deer hair was a tough expierience for me too but suprisingly I took a lead after that round.I found a patch of hair that was very fine therefore easier to handle.Strong thread helped to keep tension on the materials so the ready bullet head did not spin around the hook shank. Not easy fly to tie but it looks like the others struggled even more grin

Hi Hubert I think the league divisions are a good idea, the flies this year were straight forward enough, a few awkward processes but nothing too difficult.
For next year I think the flies should be more difficult, more processes, more variety maybe a salmon fly or two, more difficult the better.
Maybe flies of ascending difficulty for each division.

Any comments.

donal, please excuse my interruption of your correspondence with hubert,i agree with you on grading the degrees of difficulty between leagues, not so sure about more complex /difficult flies ie salmon flies.if you want to test your skills in that direction i would recommend that you have ago at the f.q.s.a.world salmon flytying championship out of quebec canada,be aware it is tough, best o luck if you do.regards jimmy10.

Hi Jimmy your interruption is welcomed, my reasoning behind suggesting more complex flies is simple ‘’the challenge’’. Most flies we tie are for fishing and are not usually that complex, this is a fly tying competition after all and the flies we tie in the competition should be more complex/difficult than our usual fishing flies.
I have considered entering the F.Q.S.A and will do in the future, but you don’t have to go to Canada to enter a competition with difficult/complex flies.
Have a look, http://www.irishangler.ie/competitions

Last year was my first go at the competition, and I really enjoyed myself, so thank you for all the hard work running it.

I have a couple of questions.  What happens to all the flies that you receive?  I hope that you give them to Casting for Recovery or Fishing For Heroes or some such organisation.

My second question is that the competition is very trout orientated, and I suppose that has the biggest appeal, but in the 2010/11 competition could you publish a few salmon patterns in the magazine to give us salmon fishermen one to chose for the 4th fly of our own choice, please?

Thanks again for your hard work on the competition, and looking forward to the next one.

Hi guys.Sorry for late reply but I have a lot on my head at the moment with the second baby coming actually any time from now on.
The League format is fine by me.Relegations in between divisions seem ok to me but what will happen to the tiers that give up in on coming seasons? Will they automatically dropp to the very end of the league table?
About the choice of the fly patterns we have to tie-I think this is unquestionable and should be totally down to the judge. This is competition and we should be challenged with difficulty of the entries though they should not include materials that are not easy to obtain. An additional fly is an excellent idea as everyone can show off at what they are best, and this could be a salmon fly as requested by Firestorm if published in the mag.
I am still looking forward to some sort of summary or review from 2010 League whether published in the mag or posted here on the forum.
All the best-Hubert
