GAME FAIR WEEKEND

Heavy rain last week brought my local rivers (Lune and Ribble/Hodder) up. Unfortunately the CLA Game Fair prevented me taking full advantage (see below) but I did manage one day with the salmon rod and had a summer salmon of 10 1/2 lbs on my Orange Hackle Shrimp. A small sea trout also grabbed the same fly. You cannot beat a predominantly orange shrimp pattern (the name means nothing, for the fish do not take them as imitations of marine shrimps!), for orange is the most visible colour in peat-tinged water on a falling spate.

Last weekend was the CLA Game Fair at Harewood House near Leeds, and Mark, Magnus and I were pleased to see many subscribers. We were especially pleased to hear that the little booklet on spider patterns was popular. If you want one of these booklets, buy the August eition of Fly-Fishing & Fly-Tying. Don't forget that this magazine is produced for you...get in touch over any fly-tying or fishing problem.
