Malcolm's Week

I have made a New Year’s Resolution: to tie all the flies I will fish with in 2005 by March 15!

Other than having a few days in Ireland after a spring salmon, and two or three days with the dry fly in February when the olives will be hatching and grayling feeding keenly, I will be spending time at the vice rather than fishing. Last year I ran out of several patterns – or stocks ran dangerously low – so that I was spending time late in the evening getting a few tied for the following day. Even worse, I had to spend two days before I headed off to Sweden at the vice, when I could have had some sea trout fishing on my own rivers. So I have made a list of all the flies I expect to use this year, with the sizes and numbers probably needed, and I am going to get them all tied in plenty of time. Then, when the trout season arrives, I will have a little time for tying any new flies that I fancy tying, including newer patterns featured in Fly-Fishing & Fly-Tying.

Before I go, may I wish you all a very happy New Year.
