Anglers who fish Perthshire's River Tay will welcome the news that multi-sea winter salmon appear to be now running the river. Last week on the river saw at least 64 spring salmon caught – 30 were reported from the lower river 30, 13 from the middle, and 21 from the upper river. Some beats are not reporting their catches so the figure could be higher.
The river temperature is now rising and this is encouraging the salmon to run hard. One angler, Peter Philips, caught an estimated 32lb fish whilst fly fishing in the Boat pool on lower Murthly – a contender for the Malloch Trophy.
On the upper river, good-sized salmon were reported from the Sawmill stream with an estimated 28lb spring salmon caught by FF&FT contributor Ally Gowans.
The river temperature remained around 46°F Fahrenheit (7°C) for the whole week. The forecast for this week is similar.
