The 2012 salmon fishing season on Sutherland's River Helmsdale opened on January 11 with no sprng fish being caught. Four fish were landed on the day but all were kelts. This means the Clynlish Trophy – awarded to the angler who catches the first springer – is still up for grabs.
Fishing is free on the river until Saturday.
The day began with the Sutherland Schools Pipe Band leading around 90 anglers through the village to the river. Sir Michael Wigan (owner of Borrobol Estate, and manager of the river board) and William Jappy accompanied the throng. Mr Jappy made the first cast.
