Clyde anglers are delighted that the planning application for a gravel quarry in the Upper Clyde has been rejected.
South Lanarkshire's planning committee threw out the proposal - by quarry firm, Patersons of Greenoakhill - at a meeting yesterday. The proposal was for a quarry site at Overburns Farm, Lamington near Biggar, and would have seen five million tonnes of gravel being extracted over 15 years.
The site was only 20 metres from the river, and anglers feared the superquarry would easily flood, polluting the downstream spawning beds. The stretch in question has a reputation as having the best brown trout fishing in Scotland.
