Ronnie Glass from Kelso (pictured) has won this year's Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship. Ronnie, a member of Kelso AA, had 12 trout for 27lb 9.8oz, and beat 60 other finalists at the Lake of Menteith last Saturday.
Ronnie narrowly pipped runner-up, Allan Smith of Stormontfield AC, who had 12 trout for 25lb 3.2oz. John Simpson of Ardrossan Eglinton AC was third with 10 trout for 22lb 15.8oz. The heaviest fish was a superb rainbow of 4lb 13.4oz which was caught by Kevin Porteous of Dounreay FFA. Ronnie came third in 2004 and has now completed the double having won the Scottish National Rivers Championship in 1998.
The top three anglers have all previously represented Scotland at the Home Internationals. Eliminatory heats began in April with 397 entries. All of the heats and the final were run on a partial catch-and-release basis with the first three fish being retained. The Championship, which is sponsored by Glasgow Angling Centre, doubles as the qualifier for the 2012 Home Internationals. The final of the 2011 Champion of Champions will be held at the Lake of Menteith on Friday, October 14.
