Staniford to be deported from Canada

Staniford to be deported from Canada

Anti-fish farm activist, Don Staniford is to be deported to Great Britain days after the conclusion of a 20-day defamation case in British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver, regardless of the outcome. The trial ended on February 10. The judgement, however, could take up to six months. Mr Staniford has never disputed the fact that he has been living in Canada ilegally since late 2010 when his visa expired.

Oslo-based Cermaq (operating as Mainstream in Canada) is seeking a permanent injunction preventing Mr Staniford from writing, printing or broadcasting criticisms of the company. The Salmon Farming Kills campaign, run through Staniford's Global Alliance Against Industrial Aquaculture, showed mock cigarette packages, adorned with the Norwegian flag, with slogans such as "Salmon farming kills like smoking."

The deportation order was served on Mr Staniford on the first day of the court case. It is expected that Mr Staniford will continue campaigning against the salmon farm industry on his return to the UK, particularly the Norwegian and Scottish industry. He said: "I will spend time in Scotland, where I cut my teeth. I plan to bring energy back to the campaign. I'll be looking at the salmon farms up in Orkney and on the west coast … there will be a lot of work and I'll be getting my hands dirty."

Mr Staniford says he will then taking up a position with the Green Warriors of Norway, the Norwegian-based group which campaigns against irresponsible aqauculture practices, a job which will involve visits to Scotland, Ireland and Chile.
