Klingberg’s approach to the Czech Nymph is interesting. First he takes it back to the rivers where it was devised and the anglers who developed the method. So we meet the ex-coach of the Czech rivers team and top international Czech anglers. Prompted by Klingberg they lead us through the reasons for using Czech nymph and their fishing methods with a separate section on leader construction.

Having explored a little of the origins of the technique, Klingberg is taken fishing. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the technique but there is a brief moment of ‘oh look, another fish.’ Things get much more interesting when the techniques are explored (traditional and modern) and explained in considerable detail. Having gleaned what he can he returns to Scandinavian waters where the fishing continues.

Johan Klingberg is a top-class tyer, so it is no surprise he takes us through the tying sequences. I rather like that he demonstrates both ‘conventional’ flies and Czech Nymphs devised either by him or in Scandinavia.

Image quality is high, editing is to the point, sound quality is excellent. My only technical quibble is the DVD structure, this comes in a few large chunks so finding scenes or repeating sections is a little arduous.

Despite the accents I had absolutely no problem understanding any of the points. To supplement my ears, the producers include an English narration. Someone has written a clear script with enough technical detail to keep me interested.

This is pitched at anglers who already know how to fish and want to learn about a specific technique. So often the producers of fishing DVDs forget who their audience/buyers tend to be, in this case real live practicing anglers, not novices.

This is possibly the best DVD I’ve seen on the Czech Nymph topic; it genuinely explores the technique. And there’s something slightly humbling about a Swede talking to Czech anglers in English.
