Eye Mosquito Band

By Magnus Angus

Midge defence.
Midge defence.

I am firmly in favour of anything that deters mosquitoes and midges. The active deterrents in Mosquito Bands seems to be citronella and deet. Deet is good stuff as an insect deterrent, but not so good for most other things. Deet degrades many plastics – sunglasses and fly lines included – and has been linked with health issues, so, again, I’m not keen on slapping it onto my skin. Which is where Eye’s Mosquito Repellent wrist-bands come in. These look like a cross between a coloured silicon bracelet and a watch-strap. That bulge on the band is a compartment filled with a combination of deet and citronella. The idea is simply that I get the deterrent effect of deet, the scent and deterrent effect of citronella, and neither get on my skin – a win, win!

As an angler the idea seems good. When I fish in mozzie-infested places my face and hands are most exposed and worst hit – this helps protect my hands and a good net can cover my head!

In use a Mosquito Band lasts a few weeks (4-6 weeks) the active life depends on how many of the holes you open on the deterrent compartment and can be extended by putting it back in the pack when not needed. Pity these don’t come in pairs.
