Funkyfibre

By Magnus Angus

Streamers and parachutes.
Streamers and parachutes.

Hanked fibre aimed at parachute posts and streamer patterns. Funkyfibre has a slight gleam and a definite crinkled texture, quite soft and the fibres are fairly fine. This looks to me like an Antron type material, so it is tough and absorbs water.

Used as a parachute post the texture and fibre diameter looks good (I would treat posts with floatant.) As a streamer material, I rather like the way I can separate a bunch from the hank and the fibres stay in a bunch. The flexibility of Funkyfibre means I would be reluctant to use it on exceptionally long flies where it would tend to tangle, but it seems ideal on medium length streamers, up to say 4 or 5 inches.

Synthetics of this type can look rather clunky on flies if the ends are chopped square. Experienced users tend to taper the end of they flies in the same ways hairdressers blend hair, either using taperising scissors or by cutting into the end of the hank to break up the crisp cut edge.
