Simms ExSteam Hat

By Magnus Angus

Insulation and comfort.
Insulation and comfort.

Simms’ has used a three-layer Gore-Tex fabric to provide the weather-proof material, and a fine, soft, quick-drying fleece to provide insulation and comfort.

I can’t get at the inner workings of this hat but from the outside I can see that the seams are taped. So the outer shell is made in the same way modern waterproof jackets are put together, ie using a waterproof breathable fabric which is taped along the seams to create a completely waterproof garment.

As should be obvious from the photograph, this has fold-down ‘ear flaps.’ Actually, they're a bit more than that. When folded down the flaps also cover the back of my neck, which is really quite snug when wearing a high-collared jacket. At the back, Simms has fitted a volume adjuster. Too loose and this comes down over my eyes; too tight and it perches high on my head. Get it right and the hat sits snugly and the elasticated band inside holds it firmly in place. With the flaps down and linked together under my chin by their Velcro tabs it would take a mighty wind to blow this off my head.

Comfortable, warm and well made.
