Is Fulling Mill setting out to flatter by calling its new Salmon Double ‘The Editor’?

Made by Hayabusa for Fulling Mill. The hook I have in my hand is an elegant size 6 double: black nickel, 1,5x long straight shank with a large up-eye. The pack says these have a ‘Perfect round bend’. Points are conical needle shaped, relatively long and very sharp. Barbs are small and set well back from the points.

Double hooks are formed from one length of wire. If, like these, the legs are brazed that means someone working on each hook individually. As far as I know it is impossible to mechanise that stage in the process. Brazing fixes the position of the legs and gives a firm, hopefully smooth, base for tying. On these the brazing is uniformly good, no rough surfaces, no awkward peaks and only very occasional slight bumps.

Sorting through these 10 hooks the angle of the eye varies quite a bit and a couple seem to have one leg fractionally shorter than the other: results of these being individually made and hand finished. Slight differences in leg length do not concern me at all and the eye angle is a mainly a cosmetic issue. The majority have the eye bent up as a fairly shallow angle, which I prefer.

As low water doubles go these have relatively short shanks, which suits modern salmon flies more than older more traditional low-water doubles. Sizes are from 6 to 12.
