Two films on one DVD, one hour of fishing, one hour of fly tying. Visually this is exceptional: stunning locations, good action footage, really great underwater filming; then in the studio, exceptionally good close-up footage of Morten Oeland tying his patterns.
However, I have mixed feeling about the editing and how scenes have been linked and assembled. The fishing section seemed to lack pace. Lingering linking scenes became intrusive (yes, I know Greenland and New Zealand are gorgeous; now excite me!), and for goodness sake is that bland languid music meant to lull me to sleep?
This is a Danish production but I viewed the English version. The narrator speaks clearly, enunciates beautifully, but in both his presentation and the script he reads rather pedestrian. Frankly, I would rather hear from the angler, hear and feel his excitement; I can live with accented English.
Just watching Oeland fishing is enough to tell me this is first-class caster and a skilled angler but the narrator tells me very little about what he’s doing and how or why. The narration seems like a barrier, a layer, between me and the angler.
That issue is still there when Oeland ties his flies. Thankfully, I can see what he does so well and I was a little less aware of the narrator. Oeland presents me with some fine fishing flies, but more than that, he offers some original patterns and techniques – from very simple CdC hackled caddis, to a very clever and very convincing deer hackled Mayfly.
Oeland ties some nice techniques but the film maker makes too little of some of the finer points.
Brilliant, innovative, modern fly tying which had me watching the tying sequences several times. It’s a pity the DVD isn’t chopped into chapters so I can skip to the one I want.
Lack of pace, bland narration and dull music are slightly off-putting. However, Oeland’s skills as an angler and innovative fly tyer are exceptional so this is worth viewing.
