The first time I saw something like this was in a Roman Moser article in FF&FT many years ago. More recently, Scandinavian salmon anglers have been experimenting with ‘Turbo-cones’ flattened metal cones fitted to tube flies and Marc Petitjean’s Magic Heads exploit similar effects
Imagine flies which push water out of their way and send out vibrations to the sensitive lateral lines of hunting fish, or, alternatively, flies which convert the rush of water passing them into regular pulsing movement – that was and is the idea in a nutshell. Actually, there are two ideas there: one sends out vibrations through water to the fish so the fish feel, the other vibrates the fly or the fibres of the fly in an imitation of the struggling, wriggling or waggling motion of many aquatic life forms, ie insects and small fish, so fish see something more suggestive of life-forms.
Vibro Discs are purpose made, a slightly concave plastic disc with a hole drilled in the centre. The idea is they can be fitted to a fly or to the leader immediately ahead of a fly. When the fly is retrieved or held in a flowing stream, as water forces its way around the disc causing it to wiggle, sending out vibrations and or wiggling the fly.
Light, semi-rigid plastic, the concavity is slight and the plastic is soft enough so that I can bend it for a deeper cup shape.
Vibro Discs are available in three sizes, and as clear or coloured discs.
